SOS-based Pulsed Power Generators

SOS-BASED PULSED POWER GENERATOR

SOS-based Pulsed Power Generators

Pulsed Power Laboratory develops repetitive nanosecond generators with high peak and average power. The generators are based on the use of an all-solid-state switching system that includes thyristors or transistors as primary switches, magnetic switches in magnetic compression unit, and a semiconductor opening switch based on SOS diodes in the final power amplifier. The developed generators have the following range of output parameters: voltage pulse amplitude 50 kV to 1 MV, pulse current 1 to 10 kA, peak power 100 MW to 6 GW, pulse duration 3 to 60 ns, and pulse repetition frequency from hundreds Hz to units kHz.

The developed generators and semiconductor opening switches are used both in Russia and abroad. Since 1996, pulsed generators and opening switches have been supplied to 22 foreign organizations in the following countries: USA, China, UK, Japan, Germany, Israel, France, Korea, and India.

Generators are used in the following areas of electrophysics and high-current electronics:

  • High current E-beam and X-ray generators
  • Lasers pumping
  • Streamer corona discharge technologies
  • High-power microwaves

Generators are characterized by the following qualities:

  • All-solid-state switching system
  • High pulse repetition frequency
  • Very high stability of pulse shape in repetitive mode of operation
  • Long lifetime
  • Short and open circuits operating regime capability

S-500 generator

A new SOS pumping circuit based on a double forming line has been proposed and realized in the generator. The pumping circuit provides a reverse current increasing through the SOS up to 14 kA within ~12 ns. The SOS cuts off the current in ~2 ns. The output pulse rise time in the transmission line is shortened additionally by a ferrite sharpener to the value of ~1 ns, and by a semiconductor sharpener to ~0.5 ns. The generator has been developed for application in the field of high-power microwave electronics.
